Victims of Drunk Drivers
A drunk driver can change your life forever. Driving intoxicated is one of the most selfish things an individual can do. They do so without regard for themselves or others. If you find yourself or a loved one victimized by a drunk driver, you deserve to seek justice to the fullest extent of the law. This means you should make a police report to file criminal charges. It also means speaking to an experienced DUI attorney to file a civil suit. In a civil suit, you can sue the reckless driver for damages.
Types of Damages
In your civil suit, you will likely be seeking two types of damages:
Special Damages – These can be measured by a direct value. For example, the cost of medical bills, lost wages, and permanent injury all tend to be easily quantifiable.
General Damages – These are not so easy to put a number on. How much is your pain and suffering worth? How much should the drunk driver have to pay for your ongoing mental anguish?
An attorney can help you understand the amount of compensation to which you are entitled. Your lawyer will negotiate on your behalf with the defendant’s attorney.
