If you ride a motorcycle, you are well aware of deadly accidents, probably more than most people. The thick outer shell of a car doesn’t protect you. You are conscious of the erratic movements of drivers. Thankfully, as a motorcyclist that is more alert to the unpredictable maneuvers of vehicles, you can prevent accidents from occurring. Here are a few ways how motorcyclists can prevent accidents.
Make Yourself Visible
One of the biggest causes of accidents, especially motorcycle accidents, is that the driver of the vehicle could not see the motorcyclist. Try your best to make yourself visible. Wear a brightly colored jacket or helmet. Make sure to wear reflective clothing if you are riding your motorcycle at night. Don’t try and cut around or between cars where you will not be easily noticed. By seeing you, a car can avoid you.
Obey the Speed Limit
While riding a motorcycle can be exhilarating, it is also much more exposed than a car. You need to make sure that you follow the speed limit while driving on the road. Even just 5-10mph over the speed limit can mean the difference between injury and death.
Wear a Camera
Wearing a camera isn’t exactly prevention but rather protection from liability. With a camera you will be able to prove fault if an accident occurs. Many motorcyclists find that wearing a camera also prevents incidences of road rage. There are many different cameras on the market today that can attach to your bike or helmet.
Working lights
It is amazing how many motorcycles don’t have functioning headlights that aid in visibility at night. Before you get out on the road, do a systems check of your motorcycle. If you have a light out, get it fixed as soon as possible and do not ride in the dark.
