McKinney Animal and Dog Bites Attorney

Dog and Other Animal Bite Lawyer Serving McKinney

When a dog or other animal bites you, it is considered a significant health risk. Not only do you have to worry about the initial injury, but infections are common with animal bites. All animal mouths are loaded with bacteria, many of which can cause life-threatening diseases if they enter broken skin. More than 130 disease-causing microbes have been isolated from dog and cat bite wounds alone. If a dog or other animal has injured you, consult our dog bite attorneys to see your next steps. As always, the best and easiest way to prevent dog bites is to know what not to do when approached by an aggressive dog or another animal.

Damage Caused by Animals

Bites to the hand, whether from cats or dogs, are among the most dangerous because of the complex structures of the hand. There are many bones, tendons, joints and layers of divisional tissue called “fascia” in the hand which provides many places for bacteria to grow and thrive. Compounding that problem, there is less blood circulation in these areas which makes it harder for the body to fight infection in the hand or to circulate bacteria-killing medicines successfully. Infections that develop in the hand may lead to severe complications, such as osteomyelitis, septic arthritis and worse. Unchecked, these infections can cause a body-wide state of infection known as sepsis which is life-threatening.

We are occasionally asked whether dog bites are worse than cat bites and vice-versa. Dog bites often do more initial damage, but only 3 to 18 percent become infected. In contrast, cat bites may appear more trivial, but up to 80 percent of cat bites may become infected if proper care is not taken. As infections are often the more serious threat to the health of the bitten person, it is wise to pay careful attention and seek medical attention if a cat bite begins to develop signs of an advancing infection. The three most significant infections isolated from dog and cat bites are:

  • Pasteurellosis
  • Streptococcal and Staphylococcal
  • Capnocytophaga

Who Is at the Highest Risk?

Anyone who is bitten by a dog or a cat and who does not take proper care of the wound is at risk of developing one of the above infections.  However, some people are at increased danger of developing an infection that is more life-threatening. Those with the conditions below are at higher risk.

  • Over 50 years of age
  • Have diabetes, circulatory problems, liver disease, alcoholism, or HIV/AIDS
  • Have had a mastectomy or organ transplant
  • Are taking chemotherapy or long-term steroids
  • Have had their spleen removed

Your health is the most important factor, and a doctor should be consulted the day you were bitten, especially if you are in the at-risk group due to any of the conditions above. Once medical attention has been administered, if you are in need of an attorney to help you recover medical expenses and compensation for pain and suffering you or a loved one has endured, call Joe Lucé. He and his team are happy to help and will provide you with an initial consultation about your case at absolutely no cost.
