Check Your Antifreeze
Make sure you have filled it to the proper level and have used the right formula for your winter conditions.
Check Your Tires
Make sure they are inflated to the proper pressure and the tread is in good condition. Remember you will want your tires on the lower side rather than high-pressure because it will be able to get a better grip. Look to your owner’s manual for the recommended tire pressure in winter driving.
Check Your Wiper Blades and Wiper Reservoir
Make sure your wiper blades are not too worn and fill your reservoir with winter formula that has a de-icing agent.
Pack a Winter Emergency Travel Kit
Prepare an emergency kit for your car. This way if you end up having an accident in the cold, you are prepared if you have to wait for a while. This is to have in addition to your typical emergency pack with accident flares, lights, and medical kit. Pack the following:
- Flashlight
- Warm Blankets and Extra Clothing
- Water and Snacks
- Clean Towel
- Ice Scraper or Commercial Deicer
- Shovel
- Small Broom or Brush
- Spare Key
- Sand or Kitty Litter
