Many people don’t fully understand child support. Child support is not alimony. Alimony is spousal support, and is paid directly to the spouse to compensate for loss of income. Child support is money paid for the care and well-being of the child or children that the couple produced. Child support is designed to cover part of the expenses for raising the child, and include food, clothing and housing.
Child support is meant to cover part of the cost of getting and maintaining a health care policy for the child and any medical expenses related to the child. It also covers education expenses such as books, school clothes, lunches, tuition, and field trips. In other words, child support is meant to financially help with the raising and well-being of the child.
While specific child care amounts are determined by the courts and needs of the custodial parent, the non-custodial parent can expect to pay a specific percentage of their net income. If the couple has one child, the non-custodial parent can expect to pay 20 percent of their net pay in child support. If the couple has two children, the non-custodial parent can expect to pay 25 percent of their net income in child support. The amount increases for each child involved in the divorce.
