Dallas resident Joey Salas may have to have his legs amputated due to a hit and run accident on Jan. 12th. At approximately 8 p.m. Salas, 42, was leaving a Mexican restaurant off Twelfth Street in north Oak Cliff in his wheelchair when a white Ford F-150 knocked him out of his chair. The truck drove off after hitting Salas and never came back.
Salas, who has cerebral palsy, was taken to the hospital and given immediate medical attention. Salas and his family have set up a gofundme page to help pay for his medical bills and hope that the driver will come forth and take responsibility for the accident. Police urge people to be on the lookout for the truck; it may have some front end damage because of the accident.
What to Do After a Hit and Run
Hit and run accidents are hard to prevent because they happen so suddenly, but you can take a few steps after the accident to make your legal proceedings a lot less stressful. After a hit and run accident, be sure to…
- Get as much information about the driver – If possible, get the model, make, and license plate number.
- Find witnesses – The more people who saw the accident, the better. Ask for their names and contact information.
- Document the event – Write down the time and location of the accident. If possible, take pictures of your car and the scene of the accident.
If you are too badly injured to do what’s listed above, get what you can and try to have a loved one or a witness help you get the rest of the information.
